When Doug Ferguson moved to Heber City, Utah, two years ago, it wasn’t just the mountains and outdoor lifestyle that drew him in—it was the opportunity to integrate movement into his everyday life. A former ski racer in the Park City area, Doug was rehabbing his knee and looking for ways to stay active in the off-season. That’s when he discovered the Fitness Court® at Wasatch Vista Park, just a mile from his home.
“I try to wake up and make something better of the world, that starts with me feeling good and then I try to exude that when I can to those in my community,” Doug shares. For him, the Fitness Court is more than a workout spot—it’s a place to focus on both physical wellness and personal growth.
Doug first encountered a Fitness Court near West Denver, CO, and immediately appreciated the flexibility it offered. Now, in Heber City, he incorporates the 20- to 30-minute workouts into his busy, quasi-retired lifestyle, balancing skiing, biking, and studying for the LSAT. “I enjoy the freedom of improvising,” he says, noting that the app helps guide his sessions while still allowing him to adapt workouts to his own needs.
What makes the Fitness Court truly special for Doug isn’t just the equipment—it’s the view. Nestled near a high school and perfectly aligned with sunrise and sunset, the Fitness Court provides a breathtaking backdrop of Mount Timpanogos and the planes that fly overhead. “This has got to be one of the most picturesque spots. I'm an airplane dork too so seeing the planes fly over is really cool,” Doug says.
Beyond personal fitness, Doug is passionate about community engagement. He volunteers at the National Ability Center, teaches adaptive skiing including bi-skis and tethering, and hopes to join the board to be able to work on more community development and take a larger role in helping aspiring skiers and winter athletes in the area. His past experience as a tennis teacher and his commitment to giving back show that for Doug, wellness extends far beyond himself.
Doug’s lifestyle—building his van, biking around Heber, and making the most of the Fitness Court—is representative of how the Campaign envisions community wellness. By providing free, outdoor fitness infrastructure within a short walk of home, NFC empowers individuals to integrate movement into their daily routines, enhance their mental and physical health, and share that energy with others.
Whether it’s catching the sunrise, improvising a workout, or volunteering in his community, Doug Ferguson demonstrates how the Fitness Court can complement life in meaningful, joyful ways, turning daily activity into an expression of health, adventure, and connection.
